Students returning from Australia resort to walking from border

The students pull their luggage towards the immigration checkpoint.

MIRI: Two Sarawakian university students, who flew into Brunei from Australia, resorted to walking 25 minutes from the Brunei immigration checkpoint through the no-man’s land buffer zone to the Sungai Tujuh Malaysian checkpoint yesterday.

The two girls, who were wearing face masks, told The Borneo Post they had arrived in Brunei from Melbourne, Australia, yesterday – the first day of the Malaysian movement control order.

They could be seen pulling their luggage from one border checkpoint to the other.

It is understood they had chartered a taxi from Brunei International Airport directly to the Brunei border.

Upon arriving at the Sungai Tujuh immigration checkpoint, the girls were informed by People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela) personnel on duty to fill in the Health Declaration Form on Entry into Sarawak and then underwent health screening conducted by Health Department staff.

The two students later proceeded to the immigration counter and once they were cleared, their family members picked them up in two separate vehicles.
