UCSI University culinary students dominate WMS

KUCHING: UCSI University students staged an excellent performance at this year’s WorldSkills Malaysia Sarawak (WMS), where they made a clean sweep in the event’s culinary challenge.

It was a well-deserved accomplishment in that Kenny Lai Chee Chiang, Lu Heng Wu and Tay Pui Yee had to endure hours of preparing their dishes before putting them up for the judges’ assessment during the WMS 2019, which took place at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) last month.

Kenny, UCSI University’s second-year Diploma in Culinary Arts student, won gold for his exquisite culinary entry.

In his remarks, he expressed his gratitude to the university for giving him the opportunity to take part in numerous competitions.

“I had never thought of winning in this competition. We had been preparing for it for months after getting to know that we had been selected from the qualifying round. Going through months of tough training was never easy, but it was indeed a very rewarding and exciting journey,” he enthused.

Kenny took his Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations in 2017 and after receiving his results, he joined UCSI University and took the Diploma in Culinary Arts programme.

Other than WMS 2019, he also took part in the renowned ‘Culinaire Malaysia 2019’ hosted by Food and Hotel Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur recently, where he brought home a bronze medal.

The silver medalist was Heng Wu, who admitted that initially, he was eyeing the gold medal.

“Nevertheless, I’m happy with my team mates and will continue to do my best in future competitions,” said the former student of SMK Sungai Tapang.

Meanwhile Pui Yee, an alumna of SMK Bandar Bintulu, was surprised by her bronze-medal feat.

“I never thought that I would get any medal in this competition, as I was experiencing some difficulties in preparing my dessert. I got nervous when I realised that the chilling and freezing units were not cold enough, and the preparation time was limited.

“I was really grateful that I managed to complete my task within the given timeframe,” she said.

Kenny, Heng Wu and Pui Yee made the cut after the qualifying round in August this year, and for the WMS 2019 finals, they were required to prepare a set of finger food and pasta on the first day of the competition; and the main course plus dessert on the second day.

UCSI University has been actively sending its students to various competitions, locally and internationally.

“These competitions provide a great platform for our students to put into practice their skills and knowledge that they have learned from their areas of studies in UCSI,” the university said in a statement.

In WMS last year, UCSI University students Kueh Wun Thiin and Kingsley Chuo bagged gold and silver medals, respectively.
